She had called him daddy.

Chapter 3

Kelly's Night Out

September 9th 2011

Kelly was setting at a table all by herself. She was not looking for any company, she did not want any company, and she did not expect anyone to join her. She wanted to be alone.

Kelly had been here before, not that many times, but enough times that most of the regulars customers knew she was off limits. For the most part, the locals and full timers knew to leave her alone. And she would chase away any of the new comers that were left within a few minutes.

Kelly was not antisocial. She did not hate people in fact she liked meeting people, and even being around people, most of the time.

But she also liked to get out some time, by her self, and just see what she was missing. And she was not looking to meet a man. She had already owned one of those one time. In fact she had owned three till they died.

Kelly had meet Gary Sara in a bar, and then after he had died, Kelly had made a promise to her self to never go into another bar again. She broke that promise and ended up meeting Allen Keith Magee. It was a blind date.

Then after Keith died, she again made that same promise to her self, and this time she meant it. She later had amended the promise to just never talking to a man in a bar.

Tasha, Kelly’s daughter was gone for the weekend on a trip to the mountains with her best friends, Gail Maddison and her grand parents.

Like Tasha, Gail’s did not have a dad. Her dad had been a cop and had been killed in the line of duty, just the same as Tasha’s own dad, Gary.

But Gail’s grandfather, who was also a cop, a retired cop, he didn’t get his self killed, cherished his grand daughter, and he and his wife were the ones Gail and her mother lived with, so when ever her grand parents took her on a trip, Tasha was always welcome and would pile into the car with them. They had kind of adopted Tasha.

Gary Sara had been a good man. He had served six years in the army as a Military Police Officer and then he became a street cop when he left the service.

Kelly and Gary had been together for a little over a year when she had become pregnant with Tasha, and at first Gary had been a little mad about her having a baby, but then after thinking about it, he was overjoyed at the ideal of becoming a father.

But the questing of marriage was always put on the back shelf. Gary wanted to marry Kelly, but for some reason Kelly was against it. She would never give Gary a reason, and Gary always thought it was because she was waiting for someone else to return to her.

Gary had heard Kelly call out the name of another man in her sleep many nights. And he could not forget the name, Thomas.

Kelly was all loving, and never gave him reason to think there was anyone else. But a man knows when there is another man between him and the one he loves. He felt it anyway.

Then on the day Tasha was born, from no where Kelly agreed to marry Gary. She wanted to set a date. Gary was the happiest man alive that day.

But only a little over two months after Tasha was born, Gary was killed in the line of duty. While trying to arrest a suspect in a drug bust he was shot in the back by another gang member.

Kelly took Gary’s death hard. She had always loved him, at lease as much as she could love any man. He was a good man. And if it had not been for someone else that she had loved more, someone from her past, then she would have been married to Gary a long time ago.

It was not until she had saw him setting there holding his child in his arms that she was able to let go of the man she really loved, and except that Gary loved her and would always be there for her and the baby.

But then he was gone. Kelly could not stop crying. She thought her world had ended again.

Gary Sara’s best friend was Sam Maddison. So it was a given that Sam and his wife Trina would have been friends with Kelly, and that they would be there for Kelly.

And so after Sam Maddison, who was also a cop, was killed in the line of duty just a week after Gary, Kelly and Trina become even closer.

Sam and Trina were there for Kelly and Tasha when Gary was shot, and so Kelly still feeling grief over Gary returned the favor for Trina and her daughter Gail.

But where Trina had been lucky because she and Sam had been married, Kelly had not been so lucky.

Trina had Sam’s parents to fall back on, but Gary family lived in another state, and he had never told any of them, or anyone in the department other than Sam and his wife about his relationship with Kelly.

This might have been because of the feeling he had of there being someone in the back ground. But for what ever the reason, no one even knew anything about Kelly and no one knew Gary Sara had a new born daughter.

When Gary died, the department did not see Kelly as a beneficiary of Gary’s. Nor did they see Tasha as his child.

Earl Maddison did what he could to set the record straight, but he was never able to get the city to except Kelly as the wife of a fallen cop.

Kelly finally told him to forget it, because she didn’t want a damn thing they had. The finial straw had been when Gary’s own family had turned their back on Kelly and her new baby.

So Kelly was alone again, except for Sam’s wife Trina, and his parents.

With Earl’s support, and Trina helping with the baby setting and doctor appointments and what ever else that was needed, Kelly went back to school. There had been a time long before this when she had stopped doing her home work and told herself she would never do it again. But now, when she looked into her babies eyes, she knew what she had to do. Kelly did something she had not done in a long time. She started doing home work again.

Kelly went back to school, in one of those Government programs that say they will have you trained in six months or less. And sure enough within six months Kelly was trained to work in an office.

The pay was bad, and the work was long, and there were too many hands to slap away, but after losing several jobs because of slapping the hands too hard, Kelly was able to find one that worked for her.

During this time she had to used section eight housing, and food stamps in order to make ends meet and care for her self and her child, but she knew she would one day be able to rise above the need for public assistance and care for her self.

The man she loved with all her heart had always told her that there was nothing she could not do if she wanted to. He had told her she was the strongest person he knew.

He had also said he loved her and would never leave her, but that had been a lie. He was gone.

But he had been right about her being strong. She had been able to remove her self from public assistance and stand on her own two feet.

Kelly now lived alone with her daughter. It was just the two of them. It had always been just the two of them, even when someone had been there Kelly thought.

Even when Gary had been alive and living in the same house with her, she had been alone.

Kelly thought she had been alone ever sense that morning when she was in his bed, in his arms for the last time, No not Gary’s arms, Thomas’s.

Sense then until Tasha was born there had never really been anyone else. But for that first two months of Tasha’s life, she had a family again. She allowed her self to be happy again. Then that was stole from her.

And Kelly thought her self weak for having dreamed of a better life for those two months. She hated herself for letting go of Thomas so easy. She had held on to him, to his memory, and to his love for so long, and then she gave it away to have Gary.

She told herself it was her fault Gary was dead. She had allowed him to love her, and she allowed her self to love him, and it killed him. His death was her fault. If she had only kept him at bay and not dreamed of being happy then Gary would still be alive. She would never let that happen again.

Over the years sense Thomas went away she had not allowed but one man to enter her life. Yes there had been a few men in her life, but not many, none except Gary that is that she cared for.

And the ones she had allowed in from time to time were there only because she needed them: Needed their help, their love, and their money.

Kelly did what she had to do to survive. That was what Thomas would have wanted her to do and he would understand. He would forgive her because he loved her. He would understand, she prayed.

After Gary had died times were hard. Trina did what she could to help Kelly. But Kelly had to feed a new born child and herself. So after only seven months Kelly was in the arms of another man.

Allen Keith Magee was a good man and he had fallen for Kelly the first time he seen her when they had went on a blind date, and he was also good with Tasha.

Tasha needed a daddy to hold her in the day time when Kelly was away at school, and Kelly also needed someone to hold her at night. And Keith was willing to do both with no promise of ever being loved in return.

Kelly told Keith about Gary and how much she loved him. She hated lying like that to Keith, but she needed him to want to stay and not hate her when she had to send him away.

Kelly also told Keith about Thomas. She did not give many details, only that he had went away and that some day he would come for her, and when he did, then she would go with him.

Keith was heart broken and said he would fight for her with all his heart and never let her go, unless he knew for sure that was what she wanted. He said that when that day come he would give her up so she could be happy, but he would fight to keep her till he knew he had lost the battle and had no hope.

So Keith became Kelly’s new man and the father for Tasha for her first few years, and Tasha become Keith’s baby and he loved her so much.

Kelly over time thought herself so lucky she had found Keith, a man to love her and her baby, even if she did not love him back.

And then Kelly was again hurt so bad when this time it was Keith that left her. She even wanted to die her self when Keith was killed during his first few days off playing war, and might have if not for Tasha.

Poor Tasha had never lost a man before, not when she was old enough to know him. Kelly was heart broken when she had to tell this little four year old that her daddy had gone away and was not coming back.

Tasha became sick and for the next few months would not eat or play or do anything. Kelly knew what her little girl was going through. She remembered back to that day with Thomas when she had last seen her daddy. Her daddy had all but said he was going to die. And later she had asked Thomas if her daddy was going to die. She knew the answer when Thomas gave her none.

Kelly had never had any luck with men. They always hurt her, or left her, or did both. And the last two just got themselves killed just to get away from her. But then, at lease they left for a reason. The one she really loved just left with out a word. Deep in her heart, she knew that was not true.

Setting here at the bar, remembering the past, Kelly thought she should be crying now, but knew she was well passed that feeling.

Sometime late at night she would wake and go into the kitchen and have a cup of coffee and a nice drink to cry in. But she tried to give that up now. Tasha had come of age to know something was up and would watch and follow her.

“Who is he mama?’ She asked one night. “Who is Thomas?’

Kelly had not known she still cried his name out load at night after all these years.

Now Tasha was gone for the weekend so Kelly thought she would just go out for the night, alone, and see how the other half lived.

“I wonder if they still do the same things I use to do?” she had asked her self, as she was getting ready to leave her house earlier that night.

Kelly had been a wild child after losing Thomas and her first child.

She had grown up and become a woman at a very young age. Thinking about it made her smile. So sinful she was, yet so dumb. She almost thought about the first time she was with a man, but then she blocked that out of her mind. That was an off limit area of thought for her, not because it was wrong, but because she would only start thinking about him again and start crying.

Setting there watching the people dance, and listening to the music, Kelly thought about her son, another subject that was off limits.

After Thomas left she had tried to keep her baby, but the state had taken the baby from her because she was homeless. She had not seen him sense.

That’s when she gave up. Had it not been for Gary, there was no telling where she might be right now.

After reaching an age where she could come and go and do as she please with out the cops taking her home, or trying to, she really become something of a street person. She had lived there and had done what she had to do in order to survive.

She had told someone once that if Gary had not come alone she might still be on the streets. But then there he was, and then the baby had come and a world of happy for her from then on. But no, a world of happiness would never happen for her. She was just too damn unlucky!

“What are you doing here girl?” said a familiar voice.

Kelly knew the voice before she turned around. “Damn” She thought.

“Hey girl” She said as she turned to see the face of Mona.

It wasn’t that she did not want to see her friend. She liked Mona. Mona was her best friend. But she would have liked to just set here alone and watch the band, and hear the music, and watch the people dance.

Karen Mona Phillips was black. And there was a joke going around the company that Mona was so black that her picture was in the dictionary beside the word black. Of course no one said this to Mona.

Mona was standing there looking down at Kelly. She had the biggest Cat just ate the mouse, grin that Kelly had ever seen.

With Mona was a white man. He was around thirty, thought Kelly, as she first looked from her friend, to the man, then back to her friend. Dressed nice, she thought. Good looking. Hair was short, but not to short. It made her think that he may have just left the military and was starting to let his hair grow.

“What are you doing here?” Kelly asked, looking at Mona, but she could feel the man’s eyes on her. She had a feeling that the man was undressing her right there in the bar. Kelly did not like this man.

Mona did. She had her arm under the man’s arm, and around his back. Her other arm was rubbing the man’s mid section. Mona was a strong person and could stand up to most men, but Kelly could see that this man had power in his arms. Too much power, and she was afraid of what he might do with that power.

“I came here to meet Mister Right.” She said this with the biggest smile. Her teeth were white as paper and as straight as a ruler.

“And I did.” She pulled the man closer, if that was possible. He grunted, and Kelly could not help but think it was a fake grunt.

Kelly had the thought that Mona was going to rape the man right there.

She is drunk as hell. Kelly Thought.

Mona was laughing as she started to set down at the table with Kelly.

She was trying to pull the chair out and set down at the same time and also trying to pull the man down to set in her lap. It didn’t work, and she fell on the floor.

“Damn Mona.” He said, as he tried to pick her up. Mona was not what you would call fat. But she did have big bones, as they say.

The man had no trouble picking Mona up. Something he did easy, and not without a little roughness.

Kelly jumped up and helped her friend into the chair. She pushed the man’s hands away from Mona. “I got her.” Kelly said.

The man stepped back and looked around the room. People were looking, but not many. Most of them were having a good time, and did not want to be bothered by a drunk that could not hold her liquor.

When Kelly got Mona into the chair, she went back to her own chair. She saw that the man had set down in the only other chair at the table. Kelly was thinking that it was time to go. But she knew that she could not leave her friend here with this man. There was just something that she did not like about him.

“I think that last drink hit me just then.” Mona Said. Her face would have been as red as an apple if that could have been possible. And she was laughing so hard that she passed gas. She stopped laughing, looked around the room, looked at Kelly who was now laughing, and then at the man.

He was not laughing. Mona burst out laughing harder, then said “I haven’t had that happen to me sense I was a girl.”

Mona was no girl now. She was about the same age as Kelly. She had been married once. He left her for another woman. And now Mona was lonely. She wanted someone so bad to love her.

Looking around the room, her eyes came back to the man.

“This is David.” She said. He smiled at her. Then his eyes went to Kelly. “He is just the sweetest man.” Mona Said. “He said he would marry me and take me out of this world.” Mona had found David’s hands again.

Kelly set there looking from her friend to this man named David. She was trying to figure out what kind of game plan this man was playing.

Mona was a great person, but she was not in the same league as this guy. Kelly knew he had to be up to something.

Kelly was thirty-three years old. She had lived with a cop, and had lived on the streets before that. And even way before that she had been in the bed of a man that was every bit of twenty years older than her. She had thought at the time she had known that man, but now she was not sure. But over the years, she had known lots of men. Now she thought she was an expert on men. She thought she knew everything about them and most of the time she was right. She just didn’t know how to keep them.

But she knew when a man was being honest, or if he was playing a game. And this man was playing a game. He had a game plan. And Kelly thought she knew what it was.

“How long have you known each other?” Kelly asked.

“Forever,’ Said Mona.

“We just met.” The man Said.

Kelly looked at the two people in front of her. And they looked at each other. Mona started to laugh. The man just smiled.

“I feel like I have known him forever.” Mona said. She reached over and picked up Kelly’s drink. Smelling it, she set it back down.

“Damn girl, what the hell are you drinking?’ She started looking around the room for a waiter.

“We met just a few hours ago.” David told Kelly. He pulled his hand away from Mona. She looked at him, but then started to look around the room again for a waiter.

“Do you come here often?” He was looking at Kelly.

Kelly didn’t answer right away. She was watching her friend, and David.

“No, Kelly don’t go nowhere except home to her daughter.” Mona said. “She does not like to go out.” Mona was smiling at David. “I do.” David never took his eyes off Kelly,

“What do you do for a living?” asked Kelly. She motioned for a waiter to come over. Maybe Mona would get something to drink and pass out. Then Kelly would take her home with her and save her from this man. Something was wrong with him. Kelly just did not know what.

“I am in the military.” David Said, “The Air Force.” The smile never left his mouth as he told this lie. It was part of his game.

“Air Force, What the hell are you talking about? I thought you said you were a doctor?’ Mona looked surprised.

David did not say anything. Damn bitch, he thought. He looked from Mona to Kelly. He gave Kelly a look like he was saying she’s drunk. She does not know what she talking about. His eyes went up and to the corner.

Mona started to say something, but the waiter showed up.

“Can I get you something?’ the waiter asked.

Mona did not take her eyes off David. Kelly was watching David also.

“I would like a beer, Heineken, and the lady here is having a scotch.” David turned to Kelly. “What would you like?’ he asked.

“I have something, thank you.”

David stood up and handed the waiter a twenty. Then he turn to face Kelly, he told her “I will return. The little boy’s room is calling.” He looked to Mona, and smiled, and then turned and left.

“What’s wrong?” asked Kelly as David disappeared into the darkness of the bar.

“That damn liar.” Mona said. “He thinks I’m drunk. But I know what he told me. He said he was a doctor.” She picked up Kelly’s drink again. This time she took a drink.

“Damn girl, what the hell is this?”

“Coke,” Kelly said.

“What?” Mona replied her eye wide, “A coke, No one comes to a bar and drinks a coke.”

Mona set the drink on the table. She was looking her friend in the eye.

“You think I am crazy? Don’t you?’ Kelly didn’t say anything.

“I wasn’t going to marry him or anything Kelly. I just wanted to have some fun.” Her face was trying to turn red again. She was making herself look easy to her friend.

“I don’t like it when a man lie’s to me.” She said. She turned to look. She did not see David. “Where did that damn waiter go?’

“Are you sure you need a drink. Why don’t you let me take you home? Better yet, why don’t you come home with me tonight?’

Kelly reached over and touched her friend on the shoulder.

Mona turned to face Kelly. “I’m just so lonely.’ She said. There was a tear in her eye.

Some people take being alone better than others. Kelly had been alone sense Keith had been killed. How long ago was that?

Mona’s husband had only been gone for a few months. And unlike Kelly, who had Tasha to help her get over Keith, Mona did not have anyone to help her get through this bad time in her life.

But Kelly was only twelve when her father had disappeared, and she was almost fifteen and pregnant when she lost Thomas. And her mother had died the same day she lost Thomas.

It was on that day she became all alone in the world and had no one that she could turn to for help, it hurt, and she had thought the world was going to end. The world did not end but the pain she felt that day had never stopped hurting. And now, she thought she knew what this woman setting in front of her was feeing. She thought she knew the pain.

Kelly also knew that she had to help her friend.

David was standing in front of the urinal. He was almost finished with what he had come into the bathroom to do. Now he was just standing there holding himself, and shaking it.

“There is a saying that if you shake it more than three times, you are playing with It.” said the man standing beside him. David was playing with it.

The guy just stood there beside David watching him. “Do you need some help?” he asked.

“Fuck off Faggot.” David said. He did not stop what he was doing.

The man watched as David finished his work. David did not care. If fact, it made him happy.

When David had deposited his spice into the urinal he reached down and took some into his hand.

“Would you like this?” he asked the man next to him.

“Yes I would.” The man said.

David held his hand out to the man’s face. The man started to lick David’s fingers. He put his hands around David’s wrist, and started to suck David’s fingers.

With his right hand, David put his private part away. Then he turned to face the man. “Happy?” he said.

The man nodded his head. Then he let David’s hand fall from his grip. “I will suck something else for you.” He said.

“Suck this.” David said as he hit the man in the mouth with his right fist. The man fell down, hitting his head on the floor hard. He did not move.

David reached under the man and took out his wallet. He put this into his own pocket. Then he walked over and washed his hands.

He was not worried about anyone walking in on him. The man was not dead, just knocked out. And he had tried to pick David up. He was a Faggot. Who would care if a faggot got the hell beat out of him?

David left the bathroom and walked out of the bar. Too many people had seen him. He would have to go somewhere else to do what he wanted to do tonight.

Out in the parking lot Kelly Ann Addison was trying to get her friend Mona into her car.

Small car, big girl, and heavy drinking, it was not going to be an easy job, because she did not fit well.

Kelly got the girl into the car as a wind come over her. But this wind was cold as ice and she felt like she had never felt anything like it before.

Somewhere in the world, someone was dieing, and calling out for help.

Kelly just felt she was losing someone again.
